Black Ontarians Making History

On April 11, 2025, a peaceful demonstration took place at the Legislative Assembly Grounds of Ontario, organized by Vanessa St Louis of Black People United for Change and Emma Ansah of EA Public Relations. This urgent demonstration was sparked by the alarming number of missing Black youth in Ontario, whose cases have been largely ignored by mainstream media and dismissed by law enforcement under harmful stereotypes—suggesting they had fled broken homes or were recruited to distribute narcotics in Northern communities.

Black People United for Change and EA Public Relations led the charge in calling for the implementation of long-overdue anti-Black racism legislation to hold institutions accountable and protect Black Ontarians from systemic discrimination.

MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam attended and vowed to table the community’s petition in the Ontario Legislature, committing to bring forth a motion in support of the Black community’s legislative demands.

The event featured powerful contributions, including a message from Nathaniel of the Israel United in Christ Church (Toronto Chapter) and a moving performance of A Change is Gonna Come by Juno Award-winning R&B artist Carlos Morgan, whose words and voice deeply resonated with those in attendance.

Though the turnout was smaller than anticipated, the demonstration succeeded in its mission: the petition was formally submitted, marking a key milestone in the fight for justice and equality.

Special thanks to Karen Hinds of Solutions Mixed, Christine Jackson of The Keeping It Real Show, and DJ Superfly of Black Nations Sounds for their presence and support.

The Black community of Ontario is encouraged to stand in solidarity and join Black People United for Change and EA Public Relations when the petition is brought before the Legislative Assembly.
