A Rise in Suicide Rates Among Black Youth

The alarming rise in suicide rates among Black youth in Canada underscores the urgent need for culturally responsive mental health education and intervention within the Black community. From 2007 to 2020, the suicide rate among Black adolescents aged 10 to 17 increased by 144%, a rate surpassing that of any other racial or ethnic group .

This crisis is compounded by systemic barriers, including limited access to culturally competent care and pervasive stigma surrounding mental health discussions.

To address this critical issue, Black People United for Change is offering four free suicide prevention workshops between July and October 2025.

These workshops are open to individuals aged 16 and up and aim to equip participants with the skills to recognize warning signs and provide effective intervention. Attendees will receive certification in Suicide First Aid through the LivingWorks ASIST program, enhancing their capacity to support those at risk and opening pathways to roles in community outreach, education, and mental health services. Each session includes complimentary lunch and refreshments.

We are currently accepting registrations. For more information or to register, please contact us at blackpeopleunitedforchange@gmail.com or reach out to Christine Jackson at chrismeek04@gmail.com.
